Nuclear time cloack3/18/2023 ![]() ![]() Nonchalance about nuclear war goes back to the Cold War when a certain American general is said to have joked that in the end, “if there are two Americans and one Russian, we win!” Such a cavalier outlook was probably what prompted French Statesman Georges Clemenceau to observe that war is too serious a matter to entrust to military men, although retired veterans too have provided sober assessments. One thing is certain though: Washington is not spooked by Putin’s threat and it will not blink if things go further south. The US appears to be relying on the fact that any use of nukes by Russia will horrify the world and cause it to lose friends, some of whom have unspoken sympathy for the way they feel Moscow has been cornered by the US and NATO. What exactly does that mean? By most accounts that means a severe, but non-nuclear response, since Ukraine is not a NATO member or treaty ally, and Russia could not have directly attacked Washington. How will the US react? Well, Washington had said Russia’s use of nukes will invite devastating consequences. ![]() ![]() Many of them are smaller tactical weapons, and according to the nuclear punditocracy, any nuclear confrontation in the current scenario will begin with these “baby nukes” in a local theater - in other words, Russia will not attack the US or its NATO allies directly, but will use it in Ukraine, mainly to signal intent, if its war goes badly - worse than it is going at the moment. ![]() According to the Federation of American Scientists, Moscow has 5977 nuclear weapons Washington has 5248. The short answer is no one – the quality of life of those who survive the more than ten thousand nukes that could be released will be so poor that life will not be worth living.īut Russia v USA is in a different league. North Korea’s threats were largely ignored by Washington, which could vaporize the country in quick time if Kim ever reached for the nuclear button.Īlthough both sides mouth the mantra that a nuclear war can never be won and therefore never be fought, there are plenty of papers, calculations, and scenarios about who could survive in the event of an all out Armageddon. When excitable Pakistani scientists, generals, and politicians waved threats of using their “nuclear bum” during tension between the two countries, New Delhi generally kept a discreet silence - with an unspoken response that India could take care of itself and Pakistan. Never before have two countries exchanged nuclear threats so openly and so frequently - not even India and Pakistan or North Korea against its non-nuclear neighbors. Jokes apart - and a nuclear war is no joking matter - it is quite remarkable how blase the world has been in its reaction/non-reaction to Putin’s threat to use nukes should Russian security is endangered i.e if Moscow does not have its way. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has now thrown down so many “nuclear gauntlets” that a collection of these gauntlets should feature in a Cold War Museum that deserves a place in history should humankind come out of this spiral of potential annihilation. ![]()
